Is the term ‘collective’ relevant at a point in history where ease-of-travel, digital spaces etc has made it easier for everyone to interact with and gain exposure to like-minded individuals/their work?
JH –––– It is more relevant than ever for that exact reason.
97cm –––– Strongly agreed. This connection can lead to endless possibilities.
At what point do you think a relationship/network becomes a collective?
97cm –––– Collective is a word that has many definitions. But in the Art industry, as soon as you produce, grow and share as a whole, as a one - it becomes a collective.
JH –––– Exactly, once you have things in common that lead to a collaborative spirit and open dialogue...
What does a collective look like today, compared to collectives that might come to mind from days gone by? For example, the YBAs, Antwerp 6 etc.
JH –––– Things these days move a lot faster, so called collectives come and go but they aren’t as set in stone as they used to be.
97cm –––– It is Intercultural. It depends on each scene in which these collectives exists. There are more possibilities for everyone now but still you have to referring to the past to create the future.
JH –––– Everybody is a part of something now.
What do you think the benefits are of positioning yourselves in a collective?
97cm –––– We can teach each other trough our different ways of thinking and creating. Its a way of sharing ideas and knowledge. A collective is like having a child, your whole ‘being’ grows with it.
How do you make sure you achieve the right balance of collaboration and independent spirit?
JH –––– Understanding your strengths, following your intuition, power of trust, sense of urgency.
How do you think today’s collectives help provide a platform for more marginalized groups of creatives (ie women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ etc) and more underexposed/niche ‘scenes’?
JH –––– With the internet being more impactful than ever it is not very hard to find like minded, forward thinking individuals very quickly. Visibility is everything. Its the future, it’s quite beautiful.
97cm –––– Collectives give the strength and acceptance to every individual who has thoughts on being different, to those individuals who are questioning their self’s, to those with the same information and encodings. It’s freedom - beautiful like Jakob said.
How are new technologies changing/improving the collective experience? Are there any drawbacks?
JH –––– As much as these technologies benefit our collective effort, it also takes away a sense of reality and structure, but that doesn’t have to be negative necessarily.
97cm –––– Exactly. While we are answering this questions in google drive you can read my answers in a real time being in different time zone. I don’t believe there is a particular definition of good and bad. Good can be at the same time bad, just from another perspective as long as there is balance.
How do you think collectives look/operate a generation from now? What will it mean?
97cm –––– As Rilke said, the world into which we are born is a world that has already been interpreted. Sometimes you have to leave home to find home. It’s hard to answer. What will happen to social media? Will it extend or will it receive an age limit?
JH –––– We’ll leave it at that.
