Juxtaposition (def) proximity, nearness in space, „contiguity“ of two variables. One variable that can be distinguished in two - both of them, independent, can function as a whole. 97cm latest project is the consequence of a perpetual process juxtaposing art and furniture, old and the new, massproduction and craftsmanship, immateriality and gravity. Tracing and breaking the perfect angles of the form and materiality of Ray and Charles Eames’ original design, 97cm blurs the line between mass-produced goods and highly individual, hand-made sculptural art and forms an object unrestrained by the perfection of Euclidean geometry. Juxtaposition challenges apparently closed systems such as industrial production, culture and nature, tradition and innovation and instead reveals them to be open towards and flowing into each other, perpetually creating something new in the process. Juxtaposition thus connects industrial production and determinism with the volatility and open-endedness of the artist’s craft. The result is a timeless visual link between the design of an everyday object and a sculpture: the latter cannot become without the former but continues to exist beyond, in its own right.
